TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language and is designed to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English. The TOEFL test opens more doors than any other academic English tests. Most people take the TOEFL test as a prerequisite for admission to colleges and universities where English is used or required.

In addition, many government, licensing, and certification agencies and exchange and scholarship programs use TOEFL scores to evaluate the English proficiency of people for whom English is not their native language. More than 6,000 institutions and agencies in 110 countries rely on TOEFL scores to select students with the English skills needed to succeed.

The test is offered in two formats: (i) Paper-Based Test (PBT) (ii) Internet-Based Test (iBT).

In areas where iBT is not yet available, the paper-based version of the TOEFL test is offered. In Nepal both versions are available.

Internet Based Test (iBT):

This latest version involves the mandatory speaking section, along with integrated tasks in both speaking and writing sections for the first time. It, however, does not have a separate grammar and structure section, as the use of grammar will be strongly evaluated in speaking and writing sections.

The iBT TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) evaluates all four language skills that are important for effective communication: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.

iBT TOEFL emphasizes integrated skills and provides better information to institutions about students’ ability to communicate in an academic setting and their readiness for academic coursework.

Online registration and Online Score reporting make it easier for students to register for iBT TOEFL and receive their test scores.

The test is changing to better measure what colleges and universities need to know: a prospective student’s ability to use English in an academic setting. The content is based on a collection of spoken and written language that ETS obtained from educational institutions throughout the United States. The iBT makes it possible to capture and score a test-taker’s speech in the most efficient, standardized, and objective manner.

The test includes four sections and takes about 31/2 – 4 hours to complete:

This is the oldest version of TOEFL Test, with some updates, delivered on the paper. The Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT) assesses the language skills in the following areas: Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression and Reading Comprehension Listening Comprehension measure the ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America.
