About the IELTS Test:

IELTS stands for 'International English Language Testing System'. It was introduced in 1989 to help universities and colleges assess the English skills of applicants wishing to study or train in the English Language. There are two versions of the IELTS test – Academic Module and General Training Module.

Academic Module:  Academic Module is for students seeking entry to a university or institution of higher education offering degree and diploma courses and is designed to test the understanding and use of complex academic language.

General Training Module: General Training Module is for students seeking entry to a secondary school, to vocational training courses or for people taking the IELTS test for employment or immigration purposes. It is designed to test the understanding and use of English language in general level.

Candidates must choose to sit either the academic or the General Training IELTS test. The two tests do not carry the same weight and are not interchangeable.

The IELTS test is divided into four sections: (i) Listening  (ii) Reading  (iii) Writing  (iv) Speaking

All candidates must take a test for each of the four skills. All candidates sit the same Listening and Speaking test. However, academic and general training candidates each sit a different Reading and Writing test. It is a paper-based test that measures your ability in four key areas of the language -Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

The IELTS is conducted on several pre-scheduled dates around the year. So it is important to plan well in advance so that you get the date that you want. The British Council at Lainchaur and Planet-Edu (Authorised representative of IDP Australia) at Nagpokhari administers the test in Nepal.

How the IELTS test is marked?

IELTS has a rigorous, quality-assured system for marking. Marking is carried out by trained examiners who follow standardized guidelines. The examiners hold relevant teaching qualifications and are certificated by Cambridge ESOL. Each examiner is tested every two years to retain their certification. They are also involved in ongoing training. The IELTS integrated system of recruitment, training, benchmarking, certification and monitoring for IELTS examiners ensures they are fully qualified, experienced and effective.

There is no pass or fail mark in the IELTS test. Candidates are marked on a band scale of 1 to 9 in each part of the test. Each band corresponds to a level of English competence. All parts of the test and the Overall Band Score can be reported in whole and half bands, eg. 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0. These bands classify a candidate's ability to use and understand English in particular contexts, and correspond approximately to the categories of English proficiency as listed below:

Most colleges will require an overall band score of 6.0 or more. Some colleges and Universities require a student not have less than a certain score in any of the sections and thus, being consistent on the test is quite important. IELTS score is valid for two years.
